Microsoft: How Does AI Work? A Visual Description

Overview

Using only the colors and illustration style of the Microsoft brand guide in 2018, I was hired to create an infographic for Microsoft Azure explaining the many ways in which their AI-powered processes can work. Supplied with a copy document which at first only gave preliminary information on how each factor of these processes work, I began the process by working through a host of different concepts, ultimately landing on the concept of a visual metaphor comparing each factor of the technology to a corresponding part of the anatomy of an android, as if it were a medical illustration. In this process I began with pencil sketches, trying to simplify the steps of each section into a visual language using colors, shapes, and symbols such as puzzle pieces and waveforms among other iconography in the style of Microsoft visual branding. For the symbols that represent each category of AI and point to a specific part of the android anatomy, prescripted Microsoft icons were supplied. Upon presenting this work, Microsoft was very pleased with the result and after sending the final Microsoft-DSEcolored version, they had no revisions.
